The Birth of Medicare

Modern Canadian healthcare began with the establishment of Medicare in the 1960s. Originally designed as a social safety net, it was meant to protect vulnerable populations from the catastrophic costs of illness. By 1984, the Canada Health Act was enacted to formalize the requirements that provinces must meet to receive federal funding. This act is the "rulebook" for Canadian healthcare.
